10 Reasons Not to Update Your iPhone 4S to iOS 8 [iOS 8 Problems]

ios 8 iphone 4s
The iOS 8 is available for every iPhone 4S to iPhone 6 users, and you can download the update from wherever you want from the internet if you're excited to try the new features that everyone is talking about.

Apple said many things in its 2014 Keynote, like the iOS 8 is the best iOS released by apple until now, but problems start appearing just after the first update which come under version number 8.0.1 this version fix some problems in the original iOS 8 version BUT!, it contain more problems and bigger bugs that damage some devices. The company apologized and remove the 8.0.1 version from the internet and release the iOS 8.0.2 which fix those dangerous problems.

Apple also said that the iOS 8 is available on iPhone 4S, 5, 5S, 5C, 6 and 6 Plus, but iPhone 4S users start facing problems from the first day of using apple's new iOS.
So I think that if You have an iPhone 4S it's better for you to wait until the company make its 8th iOS completely available for the 4S.

In this post I mention the most commune problems that face iPhone 4S users who update to iOS 8.

1- iOS 8 Make iPhone 4S slower

Everyone was expecting that the iOS 8 will increase their iPhone 4S speed, but it seems that the phone get into its maximum limits with Apple's iOS 7.1.2 version which is considered as the best iOS version for your iPhone 4S .

The company didn't say anything about this problem, but everyone is talking about how the new update make their devices slower than before.
ArsTechnica shared a speed comparison between iOS 7.1.2 and iOS 8 on iPhone 4S, results are surprised!
ios 7.1.2 vs ios 8.0 GM

You may say "1 or 2 seconds of waiting is not a problem!!" but make in mind that your phone will be slower after a time of using and installing apps so after a week you'll wait 5 and 6 seconds (if not more). Then You'll be obliged to restore your 4S to make it faster.

In this case Apple have just 2 choices:

  1. Build a new version that work completely fine on iPhone 4S and don't require that much of power to work properly
  2. Remove the iPhone 4S from iOS 8 requirement list
I'm sure that apple is working on something to fix the problem and make the iPhone 4S work faster on iOS 8 than iOS 7.1.2 and at least give users a reason to update.

This is another video that compare iPhone 4S speed running iOS 7.1.2, 8.0 and 8.0.2

2- Battery Life will be Shorter

With the big number of new features, apple's new OS require more battery capacity which is missed in the iPhone 4S.
We know that this will affect all iPhone models but we know also that the iPhone 4S has the less battery capacity between iPhone models that can run iOS 8, in this case apple must allow its users to control which features they want to enable/disable because not everyone need the new iOS 8 features, and not everyone want to keep it enable.

We can expect a new update from apple in the next days/weeks to fix (or at least try to fix) the battery drain in all iPhone models

3- iOS 8 is designed and built especially for bigger screens

In this point You must make in mind that Apple is not creating an separated iOS for every phone, in the reality the same code and the same iOS is created for all devices but the difference is in enabling and removing some features from some devices.

For example the "One-Hand Mode" and the Horizontal use are available just on the iPhone 6 Plus. Also we mustn't forget that the iOS 8 was released with the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus which are the first big screen iPhones created by Apple (the 6 Plus is the first Phablet iPhone is apple's history) so we can expect these problems to appear in small models like the iPhone 4S, 5, 5S and 5C because the previous OSs are designed for normal screen.

IOS 7 was created for iPhone 5S and 5C, both models have bigger screen than iPhone 4 and 4S but not too much bigger, so in this case, compatibility problems will not be very important.

4- Some Apps will not work

Apple still have a lot of work to optimize iOS 8.
If you read users comments online, You'll notice that many of them mention that many apps are not working anymore after the iOS 8 update.
In this point we can say that the problem is not from apple (I think), because developers need time to make their apps compatible with iOS 8 so you have two choices:

  1. Update to iOS 8 and use just the small number of apps that are already updated to work on Apple's new OS
  2. Wait 2 or 3 weeks until the most of apps are compatible with the new iOS
Another problem that you may face, is some apps will not work on iPhone 4S on iOS 8 (after it was working on iOS 7) because as I said the new system require more power, more space and more battery so the iPhone 4S will not be able to run these apps.

5- If you want to Jailbreak, you must wait

I know that many users don't purchase anything and they're always asking about the Jailbreak, to answer their question in some lines, the iOS 8 jailbreak is not yet available and you may be obliged to wait from 4 to 6 months until developers finish working on it.

6- Your WiFi network may not work

Away from power and these things, another problem that face Some of iPhone users in general is wifi problems, one of users said:
After I updated to iOS 8, I'm not able to use my WiFi network...
We mustn't forget that this problem faced some of iOS 7 users, but Apple quickly released an update to fix WiFi and all network problems with some speed improvements, and I think that the company will do the same thing this year.

7- It require a big amount of free space to be installed

Who was expecting that You'll need 4.7 GB of free space to install iOS 8!! the new features make the system bigger than any previous version.
If you have a slow internet speed this will be a real problem for You and a lot of waiting until all the system downloaded and installed.

But the problem will be bigger for 4S users with 8 GB iPhones, this mean You'll be obliged to use just a limited number of apps or delete applications that you don't use. And You must make in mind that you need free space also for new updates.

8-  You can't Downgrade anymore

In the first days, apple gave a chance for users to update to iOS 8, try it, and decide to stay on it or Downgrade to iOS 7 again.
The time is finished and you can't back to iOS 7 anymore, so if You don't like the new update, sorry YOU'RE STUCK THERE !!.

Lucky users update to iOS 8 and downgrade after facing the problems listed above, but unlucky users update after apple close the downgrade to iOS 7.1.2

9- iOS 7.1.2 won in Geek-bench tests on iPhone 4S

If watched the video above of iPhone 4S speed comparison running iOS 7.1.2, 8.0 GM and 8.0.2 You'll notice that the iOS 7.1.2 got a higher score in all tests which mean that the new update decrease Your 4S abilities and powers.

10- iOS 8 is not completely Stable

Like any new Operating System, the first version contain some problems that got fixed in the next versions. It's the same case for iOS 8, some users face problems even with the iOS 8.0.2 which mean that the last update is also not completely stable and it contain some bugs that will make your iPhone full in problems.

iOS 8.0.2 update fix essentially the big bug in iOS 8.0.1 which has been removed from the web cause of errors and damages that caused in users devices, Yes, the 8.0.1 update damage users iPhones and some of them were not able to use his phone anymore until he restore or update to iOS 8.0.2 (which also contain other errors.

Conclusion

The iOS 8 contain a lot of features that make any Apple fan excited to try it and use it in the daily life, but like any first version, apple's new OS will need some time to be empty of problems and more stable to work on iDevices.
So my advice is to wait for the next update that will fix the problem of speed, battery, and WiFi connection in iPhone 4S and in all iPhones in general, and DON'T TRUST peoples who say "We don't have any problems with iOS 8"

Have something to add? you face another problems with the iOS 8? don't forget to leave a comment below and share the post on social networks.
